# Brume vs Railway

> Railway gives you highly available databases in 4 regions, billed by usage. Brume, an alpha, runs your apps on one VPS you own, at a fixed cost.

Alpha 0.1 · in progress. This is https://brume.dev/vs/railway in Markdown, for agents and terminals.

|  | Brume | Railway |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where it runs | Your own server, one VPS in alpha 0.1 | [Railway's infrastructure, in 4 regions](https://docs.railway.com/reference/regions) |
| Who holds your data | You: your server and your S3 bucket | [Railway, encrypted, in the region you pick](https://docs.railway.com/enterprise/security) |
| Price | Free. You pay for your VPS and your bucket | [Free plan, or $5/month Hobby plus usage](https://railway.com/pricing) |
| Lock-in | Plain containers, no config file in your repo, a documented bucket format | [Railway's own IaC format, .railway/railway.ts](https://docs.railway.com/infrastructure-as-code) |

| Compliance | No certifications: it runs on infrastructure you pick | [SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3, HIPAA BAA add-on](https://docs.railway.com/enterprise/compliance) |
| License | Free and open source (FSL-1.1-ALv2, Apache 2.0 after two years) | [Platform source not public; CLI is MIT](https://github.com/railwayapp/cli) |
| Maturity | Alpha 0.1, in progress | [2M+ developers; $100M Series B in 2026](https://railway.com/changelog/2026-01-23-100m-series-b) |

Facts checked on November 1, 2026 in each project's official docs. "If the panel is hacked" is our reading of them. Brume is shown in its recommended modes: Cloudflare Tunnel and Tailscale.

## Where Brume is different

- Apps and databases run on your VPS, not on Railway's infrastructure.
- One fixed VPS bill, instead of a plan fee plus usage.
- Your database dumps go to your own bucket, outside the platform.

## Where Railway is better today

- Managed Postgres HA with automatic failover, plus scheduled volume backups.
- 4 regions, with public traffic routed to the nearest one.
- SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 reports, and a HIPAA BAA.

**Pick Railway if…** You want HA databases in several regions and SOC 2 reports, and usage billing suits you.

**Pick Brume if…** One server is enough and you want a fixed bill, with data and backups in your own bucket.

## Install

```sh
curl -sSL https://brume.dev/install.sh | bash
```

Needs a fresh Debian or Ubuntu VPS and an S3-compatible bucket. Cloudflare and Tailscale recommended.
