# Brume vs CapRover

> CapRover is a proven, lightweight Swarm PaaS with 360+ one-click apps. Brume is far younger and single-server, but starts with no public dashboard, no default password and no Docker socket in the panel.

Alpha 0.1 · in progress. This is https://brume.dev/vs/caprover in Markdown, for agents and terminals.

|  | Brume | CapRover |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Admin panel | On your tailnet only | [Public, password captain42 until you change it](https://caprover.com/docs/get-started.html) |
| Docker access | Only a separate agent, which listens on nothing | [Docker socket mounted in the captain service](https://github.com/caprover/caprover/blob/master/src/utils/CaptainInstaller.ts) |
| If the panel is hacked | Nothing without your session | [Broad control of the host](https://caprover.com/docs-next/server/security) |
| Inbound ports | None, through Cloudflare Tunnel | [80, 443, and 3000 until setup is done](https://caprover.com/docs/firewall.html) |
| Install | One command on Debian or Ubuntu | [Docker 25+, one docker run, then a CLI setup](https://caprover.com/docs/get-started.html) |
| AI agents | A CLI and a local MCP server. Irreversible actions wait for your approval | [A CLI, no MCP server](https://github.com/caprover) |
| Backups | Encrypted dumps on your S3, full restore of the server | [Experimental config backup, no database dumps](https://caprover.com/docs/backup-and-restore.html) |
| Several servers | One server in alpha 0.1, more planned | [A Docker Swarm cluster, nodes added from the UI](https://caprover.com/docs/app-scaling-and-cluster.html) |
| License | Free and open source (FSL-1.1-ALv2, Apache 2.0 after two years) | [Apache 2.0, plus an appendix for paid features](https://github.com/caprover/caprover/blob/master/LICENSE) |
| Maturity | Alpha 0.1, in progress | [Releases since 2017, 15k GitHub stars](https://github.com/caprover/caprover/releases) |

Facts checked on November 1, 2026 in each project's official docs. "If the panel is hacked" is our reading of them. Brume is shown in its recommended modes: Cloudflare Tunnel and Tailscale.

## Where Brume is different

- No default password: the admin account is set at install.
- The dashboard lives on your tailnet, not on a public subdomain.
- Encrypted database dumps to your S3, and a full server restore.

## Where CapRover is better today

- A stable 1.x line, offered as production ready.
- Swarm clustering: add nodes from the UI, nginx balances the load.
- 362 one-click apps, and it fits on a 1 GB instance.

**Pick CapRover if…** You want a light, proven PaaS that can grow into a Swarm cluster.

**Pick Brume if…** You want database backups and a private dashboard on one server, and can try an alpha.

## Install

```sh
curl -sSL https://brume.dev/install.sh | bash
```

Needs a fresh Debian or Ubuntu VPS and an S3-compatible bucket. Cloudflare and Tailscale recommended.
